If you’ve always wanted to try out the Metro series, a remastered version of the first game is currently a free download.
Last month marked the 15th anniversary of the Metro series of first person shooter video games. While developer 4A Games already put out an anniversary video to celebrate the occasion, it’s keeping the celebrations going beyond just that.
Out of nowhere, 4A Games has made Metro 2033 Redux, the 2014 remaster of the very first Metro game, free to everyone.
It’s very old now but it’s a great game and this is the perfect opportunity for newcomers to experience the first entry before the promised new title appears… but you’ll want to act quickly.
How to get Metro 2033 Redux for free
Metro 2033 Redux is currently free as a digital download on Steam and GOG. 4A Games’ announcement on X also mentions it should be free on the Xbox store as well – although when we checked it was still listed at £15.99.
Judging by responses from fans, we’re not the only ones having trouble and 4A Games has said it’s looking into it, but in the meantime, it’s offered a solution: ‘If you go through to the game page itself the button will change to ‘install’ – not sure why it comes up as full price on the search navigation.’
If you’re at all interested in playing Metro 2033 Redux, we recommend you download it ASAP, since the offer will end on Wednesday, April 16 at 4pm.
Will there be another Metro game?
4A Games has confirmed that it is working on a new Metro game. It shared the news last month, as part of the initial anniversary celebrations, via an update on its website.
Exact details are slim, but 4A Games has said that its next game will be heavily influenced by the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict. For those who don’t know, 4A Games is currently based in Sliema, Malta but was founded in Kyiv, Ukraine.
‘As art became life for many of our developers in Ukraine, we drew from that lived experience to create an even darker story, those themes already present in Metro becoming ever-more apparent and important,’ wrote 4A Games.
‘As conflict, the struggle for power, the horrors of tyranny, and the price of freedom have become part of our lives over the past 3+ years, we are still living and working during this wartime, and that inevitably shapes the games we make.’
The studio also closely collaborates with Dmitry Glukhovsky, author of the original Metro books, who has been very outspoken with his criticisms of Russia and faces an eight year prison sentence if he ever returns to the country.
‘Dmitry has always spoken out against the war in Ukraine from the start – a courageous decision for any Russian, that has seen him sentenced to jail (in absentia) – and we are proud to have him as a friend and co-creator as we tell this next, and never more relevant chapter of Metro together. Rest assured, you are in for quite the ride.’
